not-so-instant sisig

In appetizing nibbles, mammals, winged creatures on April 8, 2010 at 6:28 am

the craving just got too intense, too hot to handle.
i even ordered some from the one and only Pinoy restaurant in…my city? the state? the whole of New England?
it would have been good, except that they put a LOT of minced ginger in their otherwise delicious (and reasonably priced) sisig.
it took too long to pull out the finely minced pieces–don’t get me wrong! i like ginger, i love ginger!–just not in my sisig.
so of course, the only recourse, is to make some myself.
i first had mine, sizzling, at Trellis Restaurant–at the site which used to be my Uncle’s house.

there’s so much fun in the search for ingredients. (???) first you have to find a pork head. barring that, you find pork face/snout. the best sisig i had was in California, Ma-made, with fresh roasted lechon and the creamy pork brain mashed in.
impossible? then find some pork belly and ears to provide that unique crunchy chewy “makunat” texture.
i got lucky and found pork snouts. i just supplemented with a meaty pork belly, and the instant sisig packet,

and my fresh calamansi from California, and bottled labuyo juice,

and fresh chopped red onions. roast parboiled chicken livers stand in for the brains….

and the cravings have been satiated.
for now.
now where’s that sizzling platter?

taking the “m” word out of marriage

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of 20th Century Fox. All opinions are 100% mine.

I’m talking mundane: “characterized by the practical, transitory, and ordinary : commonplace .”
I’m sure you’ve seen the trailer by now. The Hollywood Machine ensures that you can’t go anywhere without seeing the billboard, or watch anything on TV without seeing the stars give interviews on one talk show after another.
But Date Night Movie up for release on April 9, 2010, that’s this Friday!, is one movie I wouldn’t mind catching on its first day of release, since it stars Tina Fey, formerly of Saturday Night Live, and currently multi-awarded creator and writer of the hit TV show 30 Rock.
At first I thought it would be just another formulaic romantic comedy, until I saw snippets of the film and they divulged in an interview that most of the scenes draw from both Steve Carell and Tina Fey’s improvisational background from their days at Second City.

The director Shawn Levy allowed the stars to shoot their scenes straight from the script then let them rip out improvised versions. How many movies about bored suburban married couples, looking for sparks and spice and romance, can you take? Well this is one which stands out from the usual: they get involved in much more than they bargained for, with a shoot out, a car chase scene that becomes a metaphor for marriage, a pole-dance at a strip club?
I think I’ll have some of that.

green tea noodles

In food finds, kitchen doo-dads, slurpy soup on April 7, 2010 at 9:06 am

file this under exciting food finds: green tea noodles, “chasoba” which i pounced on when i saw on the shelf at Ebisuya Market, Medford, MA.

i thought we would use it for our favorite family dinner lately, hot pot.
hot pot fixings, plus chasoba
prepare it like angel hair pasta, making sure it doesn’t overcook (3-4 minutes). this packet is made with buckwheat flour, green tea and fragrant gardenia and saffron.
i bet it would go really well with miso soup too.

Time to squeak along!

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Alvin and the Chipmunks. All opinions are 100% mine.

I did try my very best to drag my kids out to watch the two movies while they were out in the cinema. I wanted to check out the special effects of animation and live action combined. I wanted to check out if the childhood memories I harbored of the afternoon cartoons I used to watch had translated well onto the big screen. Somehow the schedule just did not allow for us to go and watch, but now the special edition 2-Disc set of “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” with a bonus Squeak-Along is out! You canbuy it now to enjoy it at home with those kids of a certain age who enjoy singing and dancing with their favorite cartoon characters, and they can sing and dance their hearts out.
It’s a bit of a challenge looking for kid-friendly DVD’s to take home to the kids that depict just good, clean wholesome silly fun. This set includes the movie and many bonus special features and extras.

Make sure you go and look for moreMore Munk Mayhem and those songs and silly dances are guaranteed to stick in your head. And I mean that in a good way!

lime angel food cake with calamansi glaze

In sweets for my sweets, winged creatures on April 5, 2010 at 8:50 am

i thought i’d make something light to accompany the kids’ special request for dinner of roast semi-boneless beef ribs…
lime angel food cake with calamansi glaze
i decided on angel food cake, flavored with lime zest and drizzled with calamansi juice glaze.
it was like a cloud! like eating lime-flavored clouds!
citrus angel food cake
a canyon of angel food cake
it is truly an easy cake to make, considering… (and! easily adaptable to any citrus fruit/s of your choice.)
